As Obama moves into his last year in office, he is expected to focus on the lasting effects of his presidency and what he sees in store for the nation after he leaves the White House.
The environment, trade, and the domestic economic recovery are expected to be addressed.
He may also use the opportunity to push for increased gun control measures.
The Republican response will be delivered by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley following the address.
